The 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander: Significant improvements for a runaway success

A bold new look, better performance and award winning Super All-Wheel Control

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. (November 2, 2009) – New styling, more horsepower, better fuel efficiency and the availability of Mitsubishi’s award winning Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) with Active Front Differential (AFD), are only a few of the many new features found on the 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander.

Since its introduction Canadians have genuinely embraced the Outlander.  And coming off a record setting 2009, which included a 31 percent sales increase over the previous year, the restyled and better equipped 2010 Outlander promises to be a major player in the growing compact SUV category.

“The remarkable and continued success of Outlander is another example of Mitsubishi products that are right for these competitive times.” said Koji Soga, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada Inc. (MMSCAN) “Canadians understand value. With its advanced technology and bold new look, we are confidant that the 2010 Outlander will continue to set records and be a major factor in the compact SUV category”.

Details on key 2010 changes are included below, but two improvements are particularly significant. First, Outlander’s front fascia has been dramatically restyled and is now similar in look to the Lancer Evolution. This aggressive new treatment is also in keeping with the currently evolving corporate face. Second, is the addition of Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) technology to the top of the line XLS model. Outlander S-AWC with Active Front Differential (AFD) is an advanced vehicle dynamics system that analyses and reacts to driver intent in real time. This proprietary system, which is similar to the S-AWC system used on the Lancer Evolution, regulates drive torque from left to right and from front to rear depending on vehicle dynamics and road conditions. The end result is superior traction and driving control at all times, on all surfaces, which adds an unprecedented level of safety and security. On February 11, 2009, the Lancer Evolution version of Super All-Wheel Control was named best new technology by the Automotive Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC).

The 2010 Outlander is available in three trim levels and four drivetrain combinations. Outlander ES comes in both 2WD and 4WD versions and is powered exclusively by Mitsubishi’s excellent 2.4 litre engine. Outlander LS features driver selectable 4WD and V6 power. Outlander XLS also features V6 power plus the additional security and control of S-AWC. Both LS and XLS models include a fold away third row seat allowing up to seven passengers. For 2010 Outlander models have something for everyone – offering value and technology, performance and safety – all in a restyled package.

Powertrain – A perfect combination for whatever your needs

The 2010 Outlander is offered in three trim levels – ES, LS and XLS – and four drivetrain combinations. Outlander ES is available in both FWD and 4WD versions and is powered exclusively by Mitsubishi’s 2.4 litre, DOHC, MIVEC 4 cylinder engine producing 168 hp @ 6000 and 167 lb-ft of torque @ 4100. This smooth, efficient powerplant is coupled to Mitsubishi’s acclaimed Continuously Variable Transmission. Outlander ES competes with other 4-cylinder offerings like Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Nissan Rogue.

LS models feature the 3.0 litre, SOHC, MIVEC V6 now producing 230 hp @ 6250 rpm and 215 lb-ft of torque @ 4000 rpm with better fuel economy numbers than last year. This sophisticated engine is mated to a six-speed Sportronic® automatic transmission. LS models are equipped with Mitsubishi’s 4WD electronic All Wheel Control system (AWC) – the driver can select 4WD at any time by means of a centre console mounted control knob – combined with Active Stability Control (ASC) and Traction Control to ensure improved grip and safety in all road and weather conditions.

XLS models also feature the 3.0 litre, V6 engine with the six-speed Sportronic® automatic transmission, but also include magnesium steering wheel mounted shifter paddles, for increased driver involvement. In addition, XLS models are equipped with Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) with Active Front Differential (AFD). This advanced full time all wheel drive technology is capable of varying the amount of torque sent left or right, where the AFD functions as an electronic limited slip differential, and from front to rear. S-AWC works in conjunction with Active Stability Control (ASC) and Traction Control.

Suspension, Wheels and Steering – Rides and performs like a car

Outlander features a MacPherson strut type independent front suspension which also employs a strut tower bar to enhance lateral rigidity for improved steering response. The rear suspension is an advanced multilink and coil system that provides an excellent balance of handling and ride comfort. Stabilizer bars are used at both the front and rear. Steering is power assisted and uses a rack and pinion system with 3.16 turns lock to lock. Brakes are large ventilated discs in the front and solid discs in the rear. Outlander ES and LS feature 16-inch alloy wheels with 215/70 R16 tires. XLS models feature newly styled, seven spoke, 18 inch alloy wheels with 225/55 R18 all-season tires.

Chassis & Safety – A number one priority

Built on Mitsubishi’s global performance platform, Outlander’s rigid unibody makes extensive use of high strength steel which allows for sport oriented suspension tuning. This RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) unibody structure disperses energy loads during side and rear collisions and controls distortion, enhancing occupant protection and helping to protect the fuel system in the event of a rear impact. Safety equipment includes an advanced dual front air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) with occupant sensors, standard front seat-mounted side-impact air bags and side curtain air bags (front and second row), energy-absorbing head protection interior pillars; child safety locks and LATCH system for CRS. All Outlander models feature Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Active Stability (ASC) and Traction Control as well as a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Exterior and Interior – Aggressive style and luxurious practicality

The distinctive 2010 Outlander is the latest product to reflect Mitsubishi’s evolving corporate look. A newly styled front end mesh grille, hood and fenders reflect the shark nose design originally inspired by jet fighter air intakes. A redesigned rear quarter panel fascia, headlamps and outer door mirrors help complete the look. XLS models also features a chrome surround on the mesh grille , as well as newly designed seven spoke, 18 inch alloy wheels.

Outlander offers ample room for five or seven in LS and XLS models, which feature a standard underfloor, stowable compact third row seat that folds flat into the floor when not needed. The five seat ES models have an under floor storage compartment. The second row seat moves fore and aft to optimize passenger room in the LS and XLS, and features 60/40 split fold-and-tumble seat backs that expand cargo capacity. Additionally, the second row seatbacks recline. Another segment first is Outlander’s flap-fold tailgate, which easily folds out for loading large packages. Moreover, when lowered, the tailgate can serve as a seat, with a capacity of 200 kg (440 lbs). Overall cargo volume behind the front seats measures 2056 litres (72.6 cu. ft.). With the second row seats up, cargo room measures 1025 litres (36.2 cu. ft.), and 422 litres (14.9 cu. ft.) behind the third row seats on LS and XLS models. ES models can tow up to 680 kg or 1500 lbs, while the LS and XLS, which feature the V6 engine, an increased capacity radiator, and an automatic transmission cooler can tow up to 1,588 kg or 3500 lbs.
